The first Type Talk of 2010

Peter Enneson on the Dutch Graphic Designer’s 1952 Initials

Thursday February 25th at 7pm
The Urban Gallery, 401 Richmond St. West (right beside Swipe Books). $10 at the door.

The Raffia Initialen are the ‘distinctive name’ for a set of highly salient typographic letterforms designed by Henk Krijger and released by Lettergeiterij Amsterdam in 1952. They were distributed in North America by Amsterdam Continental Types and Graphic Equipment Inc. in electrotype format, and later through VGC on strips of typositor film. The initials as a collection have strong links with writing. As distinctive graphs they have a place within the larger oeuvre of their creator. This presentation places these initials inside those two frames.

Type speaks volumes about who you are and how much you care. Personality, wit, tone and attitude, can all be conveyed with gesture and form. To create meaning, words and phrases need to be interpreted as carefully for the visual medium as they are in music and theatre. Pure form is the starting point for all typographic communication, this is why we present all samples of our work in black and white.

tweek is a design partnership dedicated to communicating with type.

Join us Tues. February 26th, 7:00 p.m. at the Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm St. to hear Karl Thomson of Compass360

Karl Thomson, Creative Director and Managing Partner of Compass360, will be presenting some recent work to the Type Club of Toronto at their first meeting of 2008 on Feb 26th at the Arts & Letters Club.

Karl’s talk, titled “Type-R: Good Design and Racing Cars” promises to be a fun romp through some of Compass360′s recent projects for a wide range of clients, mixed with thoughts on branding and the challenges in bringing a high level of design to motorsports (an area not generally well-regarded for its understanding of the value of good graphic design).

As the one guy in the office whose favorite comment to designers is “what kind of typeface is THAT?”, this promises to be a fun evening of wide-ranging discussion with people who share Karl’s love of good typography.

Our Calendar is set for the Spring & Summer and we’re already hard at work booking Speakers for the Fall of 2008. The following dates are all confirmed and finalized, so mark them down in your calendars lest you miss one of these insightful and fascinating talks.

As usual, they will all be held at the Arts and Letters Club, located at 14 Elm Street, and they begin at 7pm. Unlike past years, they will all be held in the 3rd floor Studio and we will have our own Bar up there. There will also be appetizers and snacks before all the Events. This comes about because there is a new Catering Manager in place and the booking arrangements and rental policies have changed for us. We are very pleased to be able to continue in the same venue and with added bonuses in services available to us. Sadly, however, this also comes with an increased cost. Thus, we have had to raise the cost of admission to all of our Events.

The new cost at the door will be $20 per Person or $10 for Students, while the cost of Annual Membership has been raised to $75 or $45 for Students. Membership allows free admission to all of our Events for the Calendar year and a discount to TypeCon and any other workshops we offer. We will be having more than 6 Events each year, so it will be well worth the cost – even if you miss the odd Event, which we hope you don’t.
