Have you ever wondered who would play you in a movie? It’s one of those conversations that pops up from time to time when you’re out with friends and you start talking about books you’ve just read or films you’ve just seen. Well, a recently posted piece at Design Observer has been growing steadily over the past couple of days. Fifteen Minutes of Fame compares photos of famous designers and the actor(s) would likely be the best fit to play them in a film.

Starting with Jack Nicholson as the man to play Paul Rand (a good resemblance, especially the twinkle in the eye and the wry smile), it goes on to offer splendid options for Michael Bierut, Neville Brody, David Carson, Matthew Carter, Tobias Frere-Jones, Jonathan Hoefler, Rick Poynor, Stefan Sagmeister, Paula Scher, Eric Spiekermann and Massimo Vignelli – all of whom played themselves especially well in Helvetica. There are also many other designer/actor pairings, too numerous to mention, and it’s growing everyday with a lot of the design community, including some who have already been tagged and matched (and some who are also editors and contributors to Design Observer), posting their own suggestions and observations about who else should be paired.
The comments are almost more fun than the picture pairings, but one wouldn’t work without the other. This may have been done before, but this time it’s certainly being done in the spirit of fun and it is a lot of fun! Maybe, finally having a group of real life designers talking on the screen, (ala Helvetica), has the public looking for more and taken the design community into a larger spotlight. Or maybe, we’re just getting our 15 minutes in the sun that everybody seems to get at one point or other in their lives. Either way, it’ll make you chuckle and want to suggest your own postings. It gave me my morning smile.
